Issues 101: Loser nyeo and the likes

This is not a new issue in Korea. Before the "loser girl" phenomenon there were already many cases, which seem to follow the same pattern. It started as a statement not intended to hurt anyone but since you utterred it in public it gets a lot of criticisms from the so-called netizens. Netizens being citizens in the internet. The Korean netizens are probably the most active in the world when it comes to time and effort poured to online activities.
The loser nyeo issue exploded when Lee Do-kyung, a Hongik University student, appeared on a popular KBS TV show "Misuda," (Chatting with Beauties). According to sources, she said "I don't like short men. Height is competitiveness these days, and I think short men are losers. Men should at least be 180 cm tall." (http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/NEWKHSITE/data/html_dir/2009/11/13/200911130096.asp) This statement made her an instant public figure. Harsh comments online on different dicsussion threads, KBS portal was also flooded with comments, almost everywhere in Korea, the issue was very alive. She bacame virtually naked on public. All information about her (ex-boyfriend/s, professors, past pictures especially beofre she had palastic surgery, posts, e-mails etc.). She became the subject of almost all talks online and offline.
This is not far from the issue of 2PM's leader Jaebom. Depsite the group's successful entry in the Kpop world, they immediately tasted the whip of the Korean netizens, which affected their career for some time. Although the group made another successful comeback, this time without Jaebom. You can take a look at the issue at this page http://spillyerbeans.wordpress.com/2009/09/07/hot-beans-park-jaeboms-issue-more/.
Other issues connected to these are Dog Poop nyeo, Toenjang nyeo, Sophitia, Gwang-nyeo, Ddal-nyeo, Baek Jiyoung and many more. Try to google and read these issues in Korea and decide it for your self.
Everytime I hear issues like this, I always think that they are very unlucky. Of all the people who are also doing the same thing, why all the blame was put to them. The issue may hit anyone whether you are a star (aspiring or veteran), a blogger, college student...anyone! so be careful in everything that you say...you may be the next target...
